CIT has the largest computing facilities in Africa housed in 15,000meters of space worth over $20million. Its two buildings can accommodate up to 10,000 students in one sitting. In 2006 the Faculty of Computing and IT embarked on ambitious BUT strategic project of constructing the largest computing facility at any University Campus in the region. With confessions from different parts of the world from persons who have visited this facility it is now believed that this building is the largest Computing Facility at any University Campus in Africa if not the world.
Block A building was donated by the Royal Kingdom of Norway to then Institute of Computer Science. The Norwegian Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Tore Gjos, officially opened this building on 28th January 2004. The building has offices, 9 fully furnished labs and a conference room.
Block B Building was constructed from internally generated funds. On 28th April 2006, the President of the Republic of Uganda, His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni represented by Hon. It’s the first of its kind that has been constructed at a University Campus in Africa. The building was officially commissioned by His Excellence the President of the Republic of Uganda on January 28, 2009. This is an achievement for Makerere University and Uganda in general.

The building was designed to be a students learning facility the building and at the same time to meet the growing demands of the nation and region, 98% of the 15,000 square meters of space is for students learning activities. What started as a dream is now a reality! From the sweat of those who labour to educate their sons and daughters the Faculty will forever be indebted to their tireless efforts of paying the tuition fees that has enabled the realization of this project. The computing labs in this building are big boost to the National economy. The different labs have great significance to the growth of the ICT Sector in Uganda. It is now possible for the Faculty to teach and at the same time earn money depending on the use of the labs. With close to 2500 computers and student population of 4,500 students [50% Day and 50% Evening] we are proud to state that our Computer to Student ratio is almost 1: 1. The Faculty is aware of the need to specialize and has thus put in place specialized labs to support the interest as well as the specialization requirements of our students.
