Cisco Systems


Cisco Systems Inc. has provided training to CIT staff empowering them to undertake training on behalf of CIT in the region. As a regional academy, CIT is mandated to ensure that the Cisco programmes in the region are run according to the requirements.

In July 2002, CIT was approved as a Regional Cisco Networking Academy under a partnership with Cisco Systems Inc. The Academy has been recognized by Cisco Systems Inc. in the past as having the best Regional Cisco Networking Academy in the whole of Africa because of its outstanding student support and Academy support initiatives. As a Regional academy, CIT is mandated to oversee the Cisco programmes in the region and ensure that Local Academies operate in line with the CISCO Quality Assurance plan. To date, 15 academies have been enrolled with CIT as their Regional Academy, ten of which offer CCNA and five of them offering IT Essentials. The academies include; the 4 public universities in Uganda: Gulu University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Kyambogo University, Makerere University (Department of Women and Gender Studies & CIT), Multitech Business School, Kabale University, Gayaza High School, Islamic University in Mbale, Kampala International University, Monacco Labs, and Kampala University. Of the 15 Cisco local Academies in place, 4 secondary schools were specially nominated to carry out a pilot study and explore the possibility of incorporating one of the Cisco Academy courses (IT Essentials) in the secondary school Computer studies curriculum.

Cisco Systems has sponsored CIT staff to undertake training in South Africa the Cisco Academy Training Center of the Middle East and African region and sometimes instructors receive in-house training by the CISCO Technical Area Manager. This has greatly empowered them to be skilled and certified Instructors.

The Cisco Networking Academy Program is a comprehensive e-learning program that provides students with the Internet technology skills essential in a global economy. The Networking Academy delivers web-based content, online assessment, student performance tracking, hands-on labs, instructor training and support, and preparation for industry standard certifications.

The Cisco Systems Programs offered are;

The professional-level CCNP curriculum builds on CCNA with more complex network configurations, diagnosis, and troubleshooting.

CCNA is a comprehensive curriculum that includes 4 separate modules. The curriculum emphasizes the use of decision-making and problem-solving techniques to resolve networking issues. Students learn how to install and configure Cisco switches and routers in local and wide-area networks using various protocols, provide Level 1 troubleshooting service, and improve network performance and security. Additionally, training is provided in the proper care, maintenance, and use of networking software tools, standards-based high-quality content in specially equipped labs with modern Cisco equipment, where students practice hands-on exercises to apply the concepts they learn at the faculty. Cisco updates the curricula regularly to encompass new technologies and improved instruction. Academy courses support successful careers in Network Design & Administration, Technical Support, Programming, and Software Engineering.

Midnight University: Because of the popular demand for short courses and in  bid to meeting the national needs and various needs of its clientele, CIT instituted the popularly termed Midnight programme whose basic aim is to support  ICT led socio-economic development through providing ICT Education for All. This programme mainly caters for those who may not find time during the day and evening hours and also caters for those financially constrained since its rates are subsidized. Under the midnight programme, courses run from midnight up to 6:00 am. Courses run under this programme are CCNA and CCA.

Virtual Learning Environment with Simulators Harnessed at CIT: Students utilize the virtual tools like the ITE desktop and Laptop assembling tool, Packet Tracer, Config Maker. Students can create their own virtual "network worlds" for exploration, experimentation, and explanation of networking concepts and technologies and complex networking protocols, making it extremely useful for individual labs, and assessments. It supplements classroom equipment and provides students complementary learning opportunities. I enjoying building a complex network with packet tracer because it doe not have limitations on the number of devices to include in my topology; a student remarked.

CIT Cisco Gender Initiative: ICT is transforming the global economy and creating new networks that stretch over continents and cultures. However, in recent years, ICT and the issue of gender disparity in its access and usage has received considerable attention. To address this problem, the Gender strategic initiative at CIT under the Cisco academy training programme initiated a waiver on tuition fees targeting the girl child in order to improve the capacity of these students, to make practical use of information and communications technologies (ICT), so as to benefit from the opportunities emerging from the digital revolution. Eliminating gender disparities has a focus on ensuring girl's full and equal access to opportunities and great achievements in life as their male counterparts. Thus the need to give female students the basic skills they would need in the IT world. CIT has boosted the ratio of boys to girls in the CCNA course and has up to 32% of female students enrolled in this short course. The girls actively participate in the highly practical and once male dominated course. They are fascinated by the course and even act as group leaders, thereby working with their male counter-parts at a peer level.

Bridging the Digital Divide

Cisco Networking Academy reaches students from different ethnic, economic, and educational backgrounds in developed and developing nations through partnerships with secondary schools, colleges, universities, and community organizations such as vocational training centers and correctional facilities.

In support of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, Cisco Networking Academy aims to help bridge the digital divide by extending learning opportunities to students in developing countries and those with disabilities. This is accomplished through strategic initiatives and partnerships with nonprofits, businesses, government agencies, and international NGOs. Networking Academy also empowers women by supporting their professional development and encouraging gender equality within the ICT industry.

As the global demand for skilled ICT workers continues to grow, Cisco Networking Academy strives to provide innovative learning experiences to help students succeed in virtually every type of industry, including healthcare, entertainment, aerospace, and finance.

Cisco Systems in conjunction with CIT organized the East Africa Cisco Academy Instructors Conference African Academy Safari 2008. The 2-day event was hosted by CIT from 8th - 9th April 2008. The main focus of the conference was to: Provide Instructors and Academy partners an opportunity to learn about changes to the Networking Academy curricula; Discuss the program's evolution and new technology; Highlight and bring about awareness of best practices within the African NetAcad community; Provide opportunity to explore new teaching methods so as to raise and maintain the quality of instruction by offering quality technical retraining sessions to instructors; and Interact peer to peer with other instructors and Cisco experts.
