Winsenga for ITU Telecom World 2012 in Dubai

The team that designed the Winsenga application has been selected to showcase their innovation at the ITU Telecom World 2012, courtesy of Uganda Communication Commission (UCC). The event will be held in Dubai from October 14-18th, 2012. Winsenga will participate in ITU's Young Innovators Competition which offers innovative youth a chance to win funding, mentorship and ongoing support (http://cis.mak.ac.ug/cocis-news/157-itus-young-innovators-competition-yic.html).

The event brings together major stakeholders in the world's ICT sector to connect and exchange knowledge, showcase technology, talent and investment opportunities (http://world2012.itu.int/about).

In his findings, Wakabi proposes genetic algorithms€based techniques aimed at narrowing the existing gaps in the association rule mining arena including algorithmic complexity and scaling methods in ARM environments. He suggests a new algorithm to generate association rules using five rule quality metrics (comprehensibility, confidence, J-measure, surprise and lift). This combination of rule quality metrics permits a user to evaluate the association rules on the difl¬erent metrics in a single algorithm run.

18 teachers undergo ICT training

A total of 18 teachers from different secondary schools recently participated in a two-day Computer Science for High School (CS4HS) workshop organized by the College of Computing and Information Science (CoCIS) at the College last week.

The workshop, according to the CH4HS coordinator, Dr. Benjamin Kanagwa, was aimed at improving the teaching of Computer Sciences in high schools by equipping the teachers with new skills and sharing with them innovative teaching trends. €œThe recent introduction of computer studies at €˜A€„¢ Level, necessitates a need to pedagogically equip the teachers with skills to implement the teaching of this new subject,€ he added.

The teachers were trained on the fundamentals of Computer Science, development of simple android mobile phone applications and new tools of teaching IT in schools among others. This workshop also gives computer science teachers an opportunity to create and be part of an online networking platform where the teachers together with the administrators from CIT can share resources, tools and new trends.

Dr. Kanagwa hopes they can work together with the teachers and officials from the Ministry of Education and the National Curriculum Development Center to develop standard teaching materials like laboratory manuals and also contribute to the €˜A€„¢ Level computer science curriculum.

Speaking during the handover of certificates to the teachers, Dr, Josephine Nabukenya, the dean CIT, noted that the School was ready to work with the government to integrate ICT as a subject and also a teaching tool to enhance effective learning among the students. €œWith an online platform, we shall further collaborate, communicate and engage the teachers,€ she added.

Dorothy Tulina, a teacher at Trinity College Nabbingo thanked the College for this training opportunity which has enabled her learn new skills that would be beneficial to her students.

Google provided a grant of $5,000 for the workshop.

Department of ICT Support Services

The Department of ICT Support Services was set up as a central ICT service unit that provides expert ICT services and guidance to all students and staff of the College of Computing and IS

The broad aims and objectives of the department is to develop and maintain the technical infrastructure of the faculty, to support the delivery of digital systems and services to both the staff and student domains to support teaching and Learning. We metion some of the ICT services provided by the university and the college.

1. Email Services

DICTS provides and supports email services to the university community. Once you have completed the enrolment formalities, you will be able to obtain your university email address with the following format: This email address is being protected from spambots. 2. Mailing lists.

A mailing list is an electronic discussion forum. When someone sends an email message to the mailing list, a copy of that message is broadcast to everyone who is subscribed to that mailing list. Mailing lists provide a simple and effective communication mechanism. Mailing lists have been examined as one of the options for making best use of communication. These lists are moderated so that only relevant information is sent through these lists. 3. Internet Services

  • The College currently has over 1200 computers distributed in 10 computer rooms. These labs are open for students use. Please note that the labs may be scheduled for other activities. Confirm with the lab attendants for availability.
  • The college also provide wireless access for all students that have laptops. Visit http://http://intranet.cit.ac.ug/ for details on how to access the college wireless
  • Wireless hotspots - Using a laptop, PC and hand held devices such as a mobile phone with an internet wireless card or Wi-Fi functionalities, students can access the internet via the wireless hotpots (MAKAir) that are located in the Halls of residence and student centric locations such as: College grounds, Senate Building, Main Library, Main Building and Freedom Square. Will need a Makerere University email address to access MakAir. €¢
  • Internet Kiosks - Students can get access to the internet from the Internet Kiosk located at: Senate Building level 3; Faculty of Education Library; College of Health Science; CCE; Department of Women and Gender and Africa Hall. These Internet kiosks are manned by student, thus giving you an opportunity to apply for jobs a Student Internet Kiosk Administrators. Nazir Ahmad Suhail defends his PhD Thesis titled: A Framework for Implementation of Blended Learning in Constrained Low Bandwidth Environment

In his findings, Nazir identifies the multimedia (learning content) compatible with the challenges of constrained low bandwidth environment and the network (bandwidth) related issues. He also assessed the €œlevel of e-readiness for constrained low bandwidth€ through self reported perceptions of key stakeholders (institutions, lecturers, and students) about implementation of blended learning in the context of developing countries.
