Strathmore holds Mobile Boot-Camp

Kenya€„¢s Strathmore University recently organized a three-day Mobile Boot-Camp at the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS). The boot camp powered by iLabs Africa and Google was held from 13th - 15th September, 2012 and over 80 students from different universities in Uganda participated.

Ms. Grace Kihunda, the project manager at the iLab Africa Research Centre, said Strathmore University has been hosting these camps since 2008 and they are meant to introduce Information Technology students to mobile programming. €œWe aspire to get them interested in programming so that they can kick-start a career in that aspect,€ Kihunda added.

The first two days were dedicated to providing basic lessons in Python and Android programming. On the third day, the students participated in a hackathon in which they were supposed to develop Android applications either individually or in groups. Some of the apps included - Phone Tracker, Performance Management System, HatariSpot and MakMap.

In third place was Campus Coach, an educative app containing study questions for courses offered at the university. In second place came Poultry Guide, an app providing information for poultry rearers in Uganda. First place was taken by mDuuka, a mobile shopping application affiliated to Ugandan supermarkets. These teams each won mobile phones.

The teams that participated in the boot camp received certificates and will get a chance to compete in the East African final competition where the grand prize is Ksh70,000 (about sh2M).
