Makerere University scoops CIO Award

Makerere University has scooped the prestigious overall award in ICT and Innovations, in the education sector of the East African Region. The award recognized Makerere for translation of the Google interface into Luo and Runyakitara languages, during a breakfast meeting at Serena hotel on 17th March 2011. This translation was done by the College of Computing and Information Sciences, COCIS, as a public-private sector contribution. (check out http://www.google.co.ug/). The initiative is aimed at lessening the illiteracy levels in the country and the region, by making it possible for people to access information in their local languages and preserving culture.

The Principal of COCIS, Prof. Ikoja, described the achievement as an indication that Makerere is poised for great heights and encouraged the students and staff to stay focused on excellence in all their endeavours.
