This programme offers a course of study leading to the postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science (PGDCS). It focuses on areas such as algorithms, programming environments, computing, artificial intelligence and expert systems. It is designed to give students a thorough knowledge of the field and to provide an enduring foundation for future professional growth. The program blends theory and practice into a learning experience that develops skills applicable to complex real-world problems.

Objectives and Justification
To build human resource capacity in computer science discipline in both the public and private sectors, especially in universities; to generate a pool of candidates for the M.Sc. in Computer Science programme; to address the increasing demand for computer science training at Postgraduate diploma level; to develop professionals with theoretical and practical skills in the ICT sector.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science (PGDCS) Programme is offered to give an opportunity to prospective students to undertake training in Postgraduate diploma level within Uganda. This programme also provides an avenue to those already engaged in the ICT-sector without Postgraduate diploma qualifications in ICT to join the PGDCS Programme. The PGDCS Programme is also a core programme for the Centre of Excellence in Computing and ICT Training and Research being established at the School of Computing and Information Technology.

The PGDCS Programme enhances ICT private sector growth especially in the area of outsourcing by providing the required Computing and Computing and ICT professionals. PGDCS graduates have the opportunity to join the M.Sc. in Computer Science in 2nd year of study.

Graduation Requirements

To qualify for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science, a full-time candidate is required to obtain a minimum of 30 credit units for courses passed including all the compulsory courses and the Postgraduate diploma project within a period stipulated by the School of Graduate Studies, usually not exceeding three (3) years from the date of registration.

MSc in Computer Science

This programme offers a course of study leading to the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Computer Science. It focuses on areas such as algorithms, programming environments, computing, artificial intelligence and expert systems. It is designed to give students a thorough knowledge of the field and to provide an enduring foundation for future professional growth. The program blends theory and practice into a learning experience that develops skills applicable to complex real-world problems.

Study Plans (Plan A and Plan B): The students on the M.Sc. in Computer Science Degree Programme can follow PlanA or PlanB study plans:

* Plan A Students are required to take two semesters of course work and two semesters of dissertation.
* Plan B Students are required to take three semesters of coursework and one semester of a project.

This programme also provides an avenue to those already engaged in the ICT-sector without master's degree qualifications in ICT to join the M.Sc. in Computer Science Degree Programme. The M.Sc. in Computer Science degree programme helps in building teaching and research capacity in the universities, especially in the public universities and other tertiary institutions. The M.Sc. in Computer Science Degree Programme is also a core programme for the Centre of Excellence in ICT Training and Research being established at the School of Computing and Informatics Technology.

The M.Sc.CSC. Degree Programme enhances ICT private sector growth especially in the area of outsourcing by providing the required ICT professionals.

Graduation Requirements

To qualify for the award of the degree of Master of Science in Computer Science a full-time candidate on:

* Plan A is required to obtain a minimum of 30 credit units for courses passed including all the compulsory courses and a Master's Dissertation.

* Plan B is required to obtain a minimum of 45 credit units for courses passed including all the compulsory courses and a Master's Project within a period stipulated by the School of Graduate Studies, usually not exceeding five (5) years from the date of registration.

The research in computer science focuses on areas such as human computer interaction, programming environments, distributed computing, natural computing, Logic in Computer Science, algorithms and complexity, algebraic specifications, formal languages, language-theoretic modelling, computational geometry, modelling and simulation, artificial intelligence and expert systems. Other research areas include: a. Bio-Informatics: 


The research on applying computers in solving molecular biology problems (crosscutting problems) is on the increase. The research focuses on areas such as the development of new methods and programs aiming at solving molecular biology problems. This includes analysis of nucleotide and protein sequences and structures; work on problems within functional genomics and especially on the analysis of data on the activity of genes and gene products (proteins); general techniques from a variety of fields used, including algorithm development, formal languages, databases and knowledge technology.

b. Networks: The research focuses on areas such as Internet, network and computer security; the relationship between quality of service and e-commerce (e-business); network optimization; traffic management, compression and optimization; Pricing issues in multi-service networks; and network architectural design.
