Paul Ssemaluulu completes his PhD studies

Paul Ssemaluulu Mukasa has successfully completed his PhD studies at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. Paul defended his thesis titled €˜An instrument to assess information systems success in developing countries€„¢ on Thursday October 25th, 2012. His studies were sponsored by the Nuffic project-Strengthening ICT Training and Research Capacity in the Four Public Universities in Uganda. Paul is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Information Technology, School of Computing and Informatics Technology (CIT).

Emily Bagarukayo defends her PhD thesis

On 2nd October 2012, Emily Bagarukayo-Ngabirano successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled, €œA Learning by Construction Approach for Higher Order Cognitive Skills Improvement,€ at Radboud University Nijmegen-Netherlands. Publications arising from the research have been appeared in the International Journal of Education and Development using Information and Communication Technology (IJEDICT) and the Journal of STEM Education: Innovations and Research among others.

Emily€„¢s PhD studies were sponsored by the Nuffic project-Strengthening ICT Training and Research Capacity in the Four Public Universities in Uganda.

In the corporate world, it is essential for individuals to easily access and share data and also collaborate with their colleagues within and outside the organization. Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is one of the applications used to achieve this integrated collaborative environment.

In a bid to help improve the productivity and increase profitability for different organizations, the Microsoft Innovation Centre (MIC) organized a one-week training for IT professionals on Microsoft SharePoint 2010. The course was intended to teach individuals how to efficiently incorporate Microsoft SharePoint 2010 in their daily activities in order to improve data management in their workplaces.

The training, held at the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS) was attended by 14 participants from organizations like Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), Growers Tea Factory, National Information Technology Authority- Uganda (NITA-U), COSEKE-Uganda among others.

Speaking during the handover of certificate to the trainees, Drake Mirembe, the MIC manager said the centre seeks to build capacity aimed at making businesses more profitable. €œThe Center works in a global partnership that enables us pass on the right courses to the public. The courses we offer are impacting organizations worldwide,€ he added, noting that the College, which hosts the MIC is privileged to be able to impact on the core areas of social transformation through using ICT to change communities.

The trainees lauded the MIC for this training, revealing that it helped address a number of challenges experienced by the individuals who were already using Microsoft SharePoint in their organizations. Gloria Nshekanabo of URA said they have been underutilizing SharePoint, but after the training, the organization will adopt the various functions within the application. URA uses SharePoint to communicate, store documents and collaborate with partners.

A total of forty-nine (49) laboratory attendants/technicians from different units within Makerere University have completed a three-week training conducted by the Center for Innovations and Professional Skills Development (CiPSD), College of Computing and Information Sciences. The free training was aimed at equipping the participants with new practical skills in Computer Hardware/ Software Repair and maintenance. It run from Monday 10th to Friday 28th September 2012.

According to Drake Mirembe, the head of the CiPSD, this training is part of the Center€„¢s community outreach programmes to the University staff with the goal of fostering good computer laboratory environments for University students and staff. This is aimed at enhancing the teaching and learning process of practical courses in labs of our respective University Units. €œIn the past, our outreach programmes have focused on communities outside Makerere, but we also want to grow our own community and equip them with the latest skills,€ Drake added.

The Principal, Prof. Ikoja Odongo urged the participants to use the skills gained to improve service delivery in their units. He reechoed the College€„¢s commitment to spearheading the adoption of innovative ICT skills within the different University units.

The participants hailed CoCIS for this goodwill gesture that has enabled them update their proficiency and called for more such trainings. For Oliver Nansikombi, who has worked in a lab for the last 25 years with only basic knowledge of the computer€„¢s components, this training has revealed the great potential she has to streamline the activities within her work station. For CoVAB€„¢s David Amandwa, the training will enable him conduct routine maintenance and repairs on the computers in the lab.

The best trainees, Mujunante Wensi from CEES and Jennifer Bossa were offered scholarships to undertake six-month CISCO training at the College.

Strathmore holds Mobile Boot-Camp

Kenya€„¢s Strathmore University recently organized a three-day Mobile Boot-Camp at the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS). The boot camp powered by iLabs Africa and Google was held from 13th - 15th September, 2012 and over 80 students from different universities in Uganda participated.

Ms. Grace Kihunda, the project manager at the iLab Africa Research Centre, said Strathmore University has been hosting these camps since 2008 and they are meant to introduce Information Technology students to mobile programming. €œWe aspire to get them interested in programming so that they can kick-start a career in that aspect,€ Kihunda added.

The first two days were dedicated to providing basic lessons in Python and Android programming. On the third day, the students participated in a hackathon in which they were supposed to develop Android applications either individually or in groups. Some of the apps included - Phone Tracker, Performance Management System, HatariSpot and MakMap.

In third place was Campus Coach, an educative app containing study questions for courses offered at the university. In second place came Poultry Guide, an app providing information for poultry rearers in Uganda. First place was taken by mDuuka, a mobile shopping application affiliated to Ugandan supermarkets. These teams each won mobile phones.

The teams that participated in the boot camp received certificates and will get a chance to compete in the East African final competition where the grand prize is Ksh70,000 (about sh2M).
