Nazir Ahmad Suhail defends his PhD Thesis titled: A Framework for Implementation of Blended Learning in Constrained Low Bandwidth Environment

In his findings, Nazir identifies the multimedia (learning content) compatible with the challenges of constrained low bandwidth environment and the network (bandwidth) related issues. He also assessed the €œlevel of e-readiness for constrained low bandwidth€ through self reported perceptions of key stakeholders (institutions, lecturers, and students) about implementation of blended learning in the context of developing countries.

CoCIS students scoop Orange Innovation awards, cash

Revising for examinations will soon become more interesting after a group of students from the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS) developed a mobile application - €˜My Revision Guide€„¢ that helps students revise on their phones. This app was the overall winner in the recently concluded Orange Community Innovation Awards 2012, earning sh10million for its developers - Fred Bisaso and Yasin Sekabira, all 3rd year students of Computer Science. They also won a two-year internship opportunity with Orange Uganda.

The awards also saw other CoCIS students - Joshua Okello, Viola Bazanye and Shafiq Muhatsi who developed the €˜Diet Assistant€„¢ app win sh5million and a one year internship opportunity with Orange Uganda. Their application recommends healthy, affordable and locally available foods.

The third prize application was €˜Brain Share€„¢ while other applications exhibited during the event included m-vigour, Skin Disease Clinic, No Pressure, Livestock Manager, Valley Dams Monitor, A Farm Mobile Market System (FM2S), Mobile phone monitoring € mhealth and QR Verifier.

Speaking during the prize giving ceremony at Makerere University, the Prime Minister, Hon. Amama Mbabazi called for increased research funding to enable the country attain actual transformation, adding that €œInventions are means by which society is transformed. Let us continue to innovate, invent and transform society.€ Mbabazi also encouraged innovators to focus on applications that address people€„¢s pressing needs.

The Orange Community Awards are aimed at providing a platform through which young developers exploit their talent and showcase their innovations.

BPO TRAINING ANNOUNCEMENT Call for Applications

The Government of Uganda through the National Information Technology Authority, Uganda [NITA-U] and Makerere University College of Computing and Information Sciences in Collaboration with Egyptian Government, is pleased to announce the commencement of the 2nd National Business Process Outsourcing [BPO] Training Program commencing September 2012.

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is the strategic use of a third-party services provider to perform activities traditionally handled by internal staff and resources. BPO is often divided into two categories: back office outsourcing, which includes internal business functions such as billing or purchasing, and front office outsourcing, which includes customer-related services such as marketing or technical support.

The most common examples of BPO are Customer Support Services such as call centers, Policy Maintenance/Management such as human resource, Data Process Services such as payroll outsourcing, and Technical Support Services. BPO is dependent on Information Technology; hence, it is also referred to as an Information Technology Enabled Service (ITES). BPO is one of the fastest growing segments of Information Technology Enabled Services.

The Government of Uganda is committed to positioning the Uganda as a prime BPO Destination as well as growing the BPO Industry. In this regard the Government is going to undertake a series of trainings for its citizens to enable them participate in this growing industry globally.

The BPO industry globally employs millions of people and is one of the major revenue earners in countries like India. Uganda has the potential to tap into this sector because it does possess the major requirements necessary for a conducive environment.

Makerere University College of Computing and Information Sciences on behalf of the implementing partners is now receiving applications from interested candidates. The training to be delivered by renowned industry trainers from Egypt, who have delivered similar trainings across the globe will equip the trainees with skills that enable them participate actively in the industry. This training precedes the launch of the BPO Center in Kampala that will employ a number of Ugandan€„¢s who meet the requirements.

Training Duration:

The training is full-time and will last for one month

Required:

Applicants are required to possess a University degree qualification from a reputable institution. Possession of adequate computer skills and English language proficiency.

How to Register:

  • Go to www.cis.mak.ac.ug/bpo and submit your application
  • You will then receive an e-mail and SMS between 21nd and 23rd August, inviting for the interviews.

    Tuition Fee: 345,000/=UGX

    Duration: 3rd September to 5th October

    Number of participants required: 60 only

CoCIS bags CCNP regional Award

The College of Computing and Information Sciences has won the overall Academy Curriculum Excellence (CCNP East Africa) award during the recently concluded Cisco Academy Conference, held in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania.

According to Drake Mirembe, the Ag, head of the Center for Innovations and Professional Skills Development (CiPSD) the award was in recognition of the College€„¢s continued commitment to excellence in delivery of the Cisco training programmes in the region. This follows an evaluation conducted by Cisco to gauge the quality of services offered by the different academies focusing on the following parameter - the number of professional development events conducted by an academy, the number of development programmes conducted for the staff, the equipment available, the pass rate of an academy€„¢s students, the student feedback and an academy€„¢s outreach programmes.

€œIn addition, the College received two other recognitions - the Academy Learning Opportunity and CCNA Discovery Curriculum Excellence awards,€ Drake added. The CiPSD conducts the different Cisco courses offered at the College.

The College continued efforts towards improving the quality of instruction in the Ugandan Cisco Academies, has encouraged Cisco to approve a grant to the College to support instructor retooling and quality assurance for both Uganda and Rwanda.

Uganda, and particularly the College of Computing and Information Sciences hosts one of the two regional Academy Support Centres in East Africa. The other is located in Kenya and together, the two centres offer support to 140 Cisco academies within the East African region including other countries like Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Seychelles.

ITU's Young Innovators Competition (YIC)

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) would like to announce second edition of ITU€„¢s Young Innovators Competition (YIC) on behalf of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Young innovators will also have the chance to win funding, mentorship and ongoing support.

The competition, which is open to 18-25 year olds worldwide, gives young, talented social entrepreneurs the opportunity to attend the ITU Telecom World 2012 due to take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from of October 14-18, 2012. ITU Telecom World is ITU€„¢s key global networking and knowledge sharing event.

Accordingly, ITU calls for projects/concepts which engage the power of ICTs to meet real-world developmental challenges relevant to one of eight core areas under the theme "Youth Innovation for Development€:

  1. Cybersecurity
  2. Education
  3. Empowerment of Women
  4. Environmental Sustainability
  5. Healthcare
  6. Human Rights
  7. Transparency
  8. Youth Employment

Submissions consisting of everything from well researched concepts to ongoing operations showing preliminary results are welcome. From these, the twelve (12) most outstanding entries -€ judged to have the greatest possible social impact and potential for business success -€ will win the chance to attend and participate in above-mentioned ITU Telecom World 2012.

The 12 finalists can benefit from one-on-one mentorship sessions with top level representatives from various sectors, hands-on workshops focused on developing entrepreneurial skills and the chance to showcase concepts and projects at a centrally located stand before the uniquely influential audience of World 2012 delegates.

Huawei sponsors 10 for specialized ICT training

A group of ten students and lecturers from the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS) are participating in a 10 day training organized by Huawei Technologies at the Huawei Training Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.

This training is part of the recent Memorandum of Understanding that Huawei signed with Makerere to offer specialized ICT training and scholarships to students.

The first group of trainees included seven students and three lecturers. They include Alice Beatrice Lwantale, Donna Mwine, Cryton Kapigi, Stephen Mutaawe, Martin Euka, Philip Lutaaya, and Sandra Nakayenga. The lecturers are Bernard Muwonge, Perez Matsiko and Michael Kizito.

Dr. Jude Lubega, the Chair, Department of Information Technology thanked Huawei for this initiative, adding that all the students were chosen on merit while the lecturers from the department of Networks were included in the training for capacity building purposes. €œThe students are the best performers in their respective courses,€ he noted.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony on Friday at the Makerere University Guest House, the State Minister for ICT, Hon Nyombi Thembo, €œthis initiative will act as an important catalyst between universities and industry transition aimed at boosting the development of Uganda€„¢s talent in the field of telecommunications and ICT, targeting undergraduates, graduates and young professionals.€

Eric Yang, the Huawei managing director, said they were prepared to sponsor more students in order to boost the ICT sector in Uganda.

The Chinese Ambassador to Uganda His Excellency Zhao Ya Li commended Huawei noting that, €œHuawei€„¢s unique selling point has always been in innovation based on research and development. I commend them today for sharing these lessons of their own developmental experiences, with Uganda through this knowledge transfer initiative with the best of talents from Makerere University. This is an excellent example in enhancing relationship between the two nations.€

The function was also attended by the State Minister for Finance, Hon. Aston Kajara, other dignitaries from the ICT fraternity and the Makerere University community.

MafutaGo wins $10,000

MafutaGo, the application developed by five students from the School of Computing and Informatics Technology (CIT) has won $10,000 (about sh25m) in the recently concluded Pivot East Competition. MafutaGo, is a mobile application that helps motorists locate the nearest petrol station with the cheapest fuel and associated car services like washing bays. It was developed by Christine Ampaire, Samuel Remo, James Muranga, Gerald Odur and Jjingo Wasaka Kisakye.

The Pivot East Competition held in Nairobi, was aimed at giving developers an opportunity to showcase their applications to operators, Venture Capital community, Angel Investors and the ICT Community. Uganda was represented by four applications which included:

  • Easy Order: SMS based ordering and supply chain management application that simplifies the way customers order for goods from manufacturers and distributors.
  • Story spaces: A digital story telling portal
  • mPoultry: Brooder poultry monitoring using a mobile phone.
  • MafutaGo: Helps users find the nearest fuel stations with the prices and services that best suit their needs.

Easy Order won in the Business and resource management category while MafutaGo topped the utilities category. At the beginning of this year, MafutaGo was the first runner-up at the Premier Mobile Awards held in Barcelona.

Pivot is an m:lab initiative to bring focus on the Mobile developer and entrepreneur community in East Africa. m:lab East Africa is a consortium of four organizations aiming to be a leader in identifying, nurturing and helping to build sustainable enterprises in the knowledge economy.

2012/2013 Undergraduate Private Admissions

The academic registrar, Makerere University invites applications from Ugandan applicants for the undergraduate programmes under the private sponsorship scheme for the 2012/2013 academic year the details are as follows:

Each applicant should:

Either

(a)

Have the uganda certificate of education with at least (FIVE PASSES), or its equivalent and at least two principal passes at advanced level obtained at the same sitting. (for day programmes, only candidates who sat a''level in 2011, 2010 and 2009 are eligible to apply. For evening, afternoon, and external programmes, a candidate is not restricted on the year of sitting a'level.

Or

(b)

Hold at least a second class or credit (or equivalent classification) diploma from a recognized institution, relevant to the programmes applied for. (Details of the diploma admission requirements for the 2012/2013 academic year can be viewed on the notice boards of the undergraduate admissions office notice boards or on Makerere University website: www.mak.ac.ug)

(c)

Be a graduate from a recognised university.
