2012/2013 Undergraduate Private Admissions

The academic registrar, Makerere University invites applications from Ugandan applicants for the undergraduate programmes under the private sponsorship scheme for the 2012/2013 academic year the details are as follows:

Each applicant should:



Have the uganda certificate of education with at least (FIVE PASSES), or its equivalent and at least two principal passes at advanced level obtained at the same sitting. (for day programmes, only candidates who sat a''level in 2011, 2010 and 2009 are eligible to apply. For evening, afternoon, and external programmes, a candidate is not restricted on the year of sitting a'level.



Hold at least a second class or credit (or equivalent classification) diploma from a recognized institution, relevant to the programmes applied for. (Details of the diploma admission requirements for the 2012/2013 academic year can be viewed on the notice boards of the undergraduate admissions office notice boards or on Makerere University website: www.mak.ac.ug)



Be a graduate from a recognised university.



College staff win UCC awards

The second edition of the Annual Communications Innovation Awards (ACIA) held on Friday 18th May, 2012 at Serena Hotel saw staff from the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS) win awards in various categories.

The Student Research Award for the postgraduate level went to Seth Muhairwe, currently working in the Department of ICT Support Services (DISS). He was recognized for designing a mobile application that monitors water levels in valley dams.

Michael Okopa, a post-graduate student was commended for designing a new job scheduling policy called SWAP that gives service without prior knowledge of job sizes as opposed to the Shortest Job First (SJF) scheduling policy which gives priority to the shortest job in the queue but requires information on job sizes which is not available in most systems and this limits its implementation. SWAP uses the measured serial correlation of the service times to estimate the job sizes.

The Artificial Intelligence Research Group (Ernest Mwebaze and Dr. John Quinn) was runner-up in the Rural e-services category. Their winning innovation was the mobile application designed to monitor crop diseases.

In the Local Content category for Individuals and SMEs, Dr. Florence Tushabe was the runner-up. She was recognized for translating the VLC media player interface into Runyakitara.

The awards, preceded by a whole day exhibition in which various innovations were showcased were graced by the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, the Minister of ICT, Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda and Veerna Rawat the Vice-President of Research in Motion (RIM).

The awards organized by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) were aimed at promoting greater local involvement in developing innovative products, services, content, and approaches that exploit or enhance communication platforms for development. This year€„¢s competition had five major categories. In addition to these, there was an Overall Winner€„¢s Award, the Annual Communications Innovation Award, 2011 won by FIT Uganda.


Dr. Julianne Sansa to attend Internet Society Fellowship

Dr. Julianne Sansa Otim will participate in the Internet Society Fellowship to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) programme. Under this programme, Dr. Sansa will attend the IETF€„¢s 85th meeting to be held from November 4th- 9th, 2012 in Atlanta, USA. She was chosen after excelling in a highly competitive application process that attracted over 260 aspirants.

The IETF is the world€„¢s premier Internet standards-development body and the Fellowship to the IETF is available to technology professionals, advanced IT students, and other qualified individuals from developing and emerging economies.

During the fellowship, Dr. Sansa will have the opportunity to participate in the development of Internet Standards and best practices and make valuable connections with global peers with similar interests.

Dr. Sansa is the Chair, Department of Networks, School of Computing and Informatics Technology (CIT), College of Computing and Information Sciences.



WinSenga does not cost $3,000

We thank The New Vision for identifying and highlighting the exceptional talent displayed by Aaron Tushabe, Joshua Okello and Josiah Kavuma, all students of the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS), Makerere University.

The trio designed an application codenamed WinSenga that focuses on how to detect ectopic pregnancies in women as well as monitor baby movements and position in the womb during pregnancy.

However, we would like to clarify that WinSenga does not cost $3,000 (Sh7.3m) as was reported in the Sunday Vision of 13th May 2012. Currently, the WinSenga application is designed to run on smart phones with windows platforms.

These phones are increasingly getting cheaper on the market today. The other gadgets used in this application- the pinard horn and the microphone cost about sh5,000 ($2) and sh10,000 ($4) respectively.

In the future, with further adjustments we hope this application will also run on Android phones which are also very pocket-friendly.The College takes pride in coming up with innovations that address the needs of the common man.


For the fifth year running, students from the School of Computing and Informatics Technology (CIT) have won the Microsoft East and Southern Africa Imagine Cup competition and will go on to compete in the Imagine Cup Worldwide Finals to be held in Sydney, Australia in July, 2012.

The Team, Cipher 256 designed an application codenamed WinSenga that focuses on how to detect ectopic pregnancies in women as well as monitor baby movements and position in the womb during pregnancy. The team, comprising of Aaron Tushabe, Joshua Okello, and Josiah Kavuma was also voted the best by facebook and twitter users who were following the competition online. In total, 14 teams from different universities participated in the finals held in Nairobi last weekend. The competition is aimed at inspiring the youth to use their imagination, creativity and technology to help solve the world€„¢s toughest problem.

According to Aaron Tushabe, their application addresses the UN Millennium Development Goal 5 € Reducing Maternal Mortality by 2015. €œOur inspiration to develop this application was drawn from prior visits to the Mulago Hospital Pediatric Ward. Mulago being a national referral hospital, has an ultrasound machine, but what about the midwives in the villages? They use a Pinard Horn but in some instances some might lack the adequate skills to appropriately interpret the sounds,€ said Tushabe.

In this system, the Pinard Horn is connected it to a smart phone through an external microphone placed at the flat end of the Horn. The phone contains an application that has a sound recording module and sound analysis module which will produce a report detailing the position of the baby during the different trimesters, the age of the baby and the fetal heart rate.

This system, according to Tushabe gives a more accurate diagnosis compared to using only a Pinard Horn. €œWinSenga is effective, faster and affordable and can even be used at home by a pregnant woman.€

WinSenga is being developed with the help of Dr. Davis Musinguzi from Mulago Hospital and a former finalist in the Project Inspire Africa session 1. The students are mentored by Joseph Kaizzi, a former CIT student and previous participant in Microsoft Imagine Cup competitions. More support is drawn from the Microsoft Innovation Center € Uganda.

By July, the application will be able to display cardiograph information and also employ cloud technology to make the patients€„¢ records more accessible by different medical practitioners.

Huawei, a leading global Information and Communication Technology (ICT) service provider today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the College of Computing and Information Technology, to offer scholarships and specialized ICT training to top performing students.

The partnership, according to the Huawei Managing Director for Uganda, Mr. Eric Yang, is part of Huawei€„¢s global €˜Telecom Seed for the Future€„¢ knowledge transfer programme which will be implemented in partnership with the College. Under this partnership, selected students will acquire specialized ICT skills in Huawei centers in Uganda, Kenya and South Africa including an opportunity to study at the Huawei University in China. In addition, the company will provide internship placements and fully funded scholarships to top performing students.

Yang said the company was committed to ensuring that young people pursuing ICT have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills that would make them competitive in today€„¢s fast changing ICT sector. €œOur aim is to work closely with Makerere University to help in training the next generation of ICT professionals whom we hope will in years to come, contribute positively to the development of the ICT sector in the country,€ he added.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Zhao Ya Li, the Director of Communications and Broadcasting Infrastructure in the Ministry of ICT, Dr. Eng. Godfrey Kibuuka. The ambassador urged other Chinese companies to also incorporate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as part of their management practices. Dr. Kibuuka commended the partnership and urged other key players to play a more active role in supporting capacity building in the ICT sector in Uganda.

The Makerere University Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, commended Huawei for leading the way in building training capacity for future ICT professionals noting that innovations in ICT would be the key driver of the economy in the coming years.

The function was also attended by the Dean of the School of Computing and Informatics Technology (CIT), Dr. Josephine Nabukenya, staff and students leaders of the College.

He joined the then Institute of Computer Science in 2002 with one mission: to contribute to the development of the human capacity in computer science in Makerere University and the country. This was achieved through the implementation of a Masters programme entrenched with a strong foundation of delivering a rich curriculum and maintaining a high level of standards where there was no compromise on quality and plagiarism was intolerable. In 2005/06 the PhD programme was rolled out, and also here, he provided his expertise.

During his ten-year tenure with Makerere, Dr. Joseph K. Ssewanyana has seen the Institute of Computer Science grow from having two offices, one computer, one staff room with a few chairs to the current world class facility with over 1,000 computers and housing several modern facilities on several square meters. Over the years, the Institute has been transformed to the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology and more recently the School of Computing and Informatics Technology (CIT) after Makerere became a collegiate university.

€œI joined the Institute of Computer Science with a mission and I think I have overstayed. It is time to pass on the mantle to other generations I have trained. I will always be available to give direction and counsel,€ said Dr. Sewanyana upon his recent retirement from the School.

CIT was built on values of commitment, ethics and hard work. €œWe maintained zero tolerance to plagiarism and to-date CIT is one of the few units within Makerere University that have the least incidents of students cheating during examinations and we have spearheaded the publication and dissemination of our research in journals and conferences. In addition, CIT has raised a young generation of Senior Lecturers upon attainment of their PhDs

Together with other colleagues led by Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, Dr. Ssewanyana kickstarted the Masters programme in the second semester of the 2001/02 academic year with only 60 students. This was a Master of Science in Computer Science and by the end of the first semester; several people had realized that the programme was rich in content, coupled with unique delivery mechanisms so during the following intake, the number of students shot to over 130 and by the third intake the enrolment was over 185. Since then, there has been an exponential rise in the number of postgraduate students at CIT following the introduction of other Masters and PhD courses. €œWe developed a culture of excellence and maintained a high standard leading to an automatic increase in student enrollment,€ he said adding that, €œcredit goes to Prof. Baryamureeba who was the Director of the Institute of Computer Science for his willingness to take on my ideas and execute them.€

Some of the pioneer students to enroll for the Masters programme include Dr. Agnes Ssemwanga, Richard Mayanja, Agnes Namulindwa, Dr. Benjamin Kanagwa, Dr. Julianne Sansa Otim, Dr. Oyo Benedict, Bagalukayo Emily, Nakiyimba Irene and many others. From this first lot, more than 10 have attained their PhDs. He has supervised hundreds of students and who praise him for being a meticulous and strict lecturer.

After a decade, the human resource capacity has now grown and Dr. Ssewanyana advises CIT to undertake a review of its courses and probably start cutting down on its intakes on postgraduate courses and focus on undergraduate. €œThere is need to undertake a review of the market demand of our students. Find out what jobs they are engaged in, if they do not match their courses, then its time to review the course intakes. If a programme has overshot demand then its time to either scale it down or phase it out,€ he added.

CIT ought to focus on delivering demand-driven programmes and ensuring that they are run efficiently and adequately. Also focus on research, teaching, improving facilities, increasing the staff numbers to balance the student: staff ratio.

Asked to describe his time in CIT, he said it was, €œexcellent, interesting and a learning experience€ adding that €œCIT was an institution within Makerere University that operated on the tenets of a private sector institution. That is why we had initiatives like formation of partnerships with corporate organizations, maintained a high level of discipline and work ethics among our staff and provided them with lunch.€

CIT is a School with a lot of goodwill from the public, government and international community. It can utilize these opportunities to lead Makerere University. €œHave a vision, mission, ambition, and courage to lead and to excel.€

His final word to the CIT community is: €œMaintain a private sector outlook within a public institution.€

For now, the father of 3 boys and 3 girls is lecturing in Makerere University Business School (MUBS), and also providing training and consultancy in management, leadership, human resource management and ICT for Development in their firm IFE Consultants at Serena International Conference Centre. In his additional free time, he also supervises a number of his different businesses like a primary school and farm in Mubende Town, a nursery school in Kirinya and he plans to set up a Leadership Centre in Nsambya with his colleagues.

Dr. Ssewanyana has PhD in Business Administration specializing in ICT, an MBA in Information Management, PGD in Computer Electronic Technology, a Bachelor of Statistics and many other qualifications. He has authored several ICT articles and publications that can be accessed online.


He is fast becoming a common figure on national television. He was featured in the new NTV series of the Entrepreneur, a programme dedicated to profiling enterprising youth. Abdu Ssekalala, a third year student of Information Technology at the School of Computing and Informatics Technology (CIT), Makerere University has developed nine mobile phone applications available on the Nokia Ovi Store. One of these apps, the Uganda Theme € has attracted over 300,000 downloads making it the third most downloaded free application on the Nokia Ovi Store. The greatest number of these downloads was registered in the Asian countries of India and Thailand.

Ssekalala€„¢s other free themes include Blue Ice, Christmas Cheer and Happy New Year. Of the applications, one is commercial € Wordbook thus earning Ssekalala One Euro (about sh3,200) for every download. Wordbook is a dictionary application with word of the day capability fully packed with definitions, examples and a selection of related words. The other applications € 101 Romantic SMS, WhirlSports, nLightFlashlight and Tutu translate are also free but they have adverts provided by an Indian-based firm Vserv.

Vserv, a leading global advertising network at the forefront of the Mobile Advertising revolution, pays Ssekalala for the different brands that advertise through his applications. Vserv is also managing Ssekalala€„¢s applications published on six other stores € Samsung, Blackberry, Appia, Mobango, Opora mobile store and Getjar.

Ssekalala nurtured his mobile applications development skills during a training organized by Nokia East and Southern Africa at the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS) last year. This training was aimed at improving the student€„¢s mobile application development techniques thus enabling the general public to use Ugandan mobile products world over and improving the visibility of the local software developers in Uganda.

After recently surpassing his target of achieving one million downloads for his mobile applications, the 22-year-old Ssekalala has now set his sights on earning $1M before he is 23. €œI am working extremely hard, trying to develop more applications especially games for the Android and Nokia market so that I can hit my target of earning One million dollars before am 23. Am sure I will make it.€

Ssekalala€„¢s first application for the Android phones will be published on the Samsung store in about two weeks. This application is a modification of the 101 Romantic SMS which is currently between the 8th - 15th most downloaded application on the Nokia Ovi Store. The Nokia Ovi Store is the firm€„¢s application store.

Ssekalala who is poised to finish his studies in June, 2012 already has two companies focusing on mobile and website development, so he will not be looking for any job soon.

Doing internship in India has changed my life

My name is Nelson Bamwine, a Systems Engineer at Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) India. In 2010 after I had completed my course at the then Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (CIT), CIT together with AIESEC Makerere University advertised an internship opportunity. The interviews were conducted by both parties and I thank God I made it to the final list. My Curriculum Vitae was forwarded to TCS which also conducted phone interviews with me and I was seconded to work on a project in New Dheli (India€„¢s capital city). Unfortunately, I did not make it to India because I was hospitalized in Kampala after a road accident that left my leg broken. In fact, I attended my graduation ceremony in a wheelchair. Nonetheless, after my recovery, TCS called me for another project so I started my internship on 21st July, 2011 in Mumbai though I was later relocated to Chennai city.


My work and knowledge gained

I am working on a project for Nielsen, a US-based company. Nielsen is a publicly held global information and media company, and is one of the world€„¢s leading suppliers of marketing information (Nielsen Consumer, formerly ACNielsen), media information and TV ratings (Nielsen Media Research), online intelligence (Nielsen Online) and mobile measurement (Nielsen Mobile). In this project, I am part of the Nielsen Media watch, mostly focusing on the media entertainment scan systems.

This project is very interesting, when I started working on it, I knew only two programming languages, but after interacting with thousands of professional engineers, I have grasped many new skills and technical grown, I can write software programs in four languages and database management systems and on different platforms. Today, as a Systems Engineer, I am given roles like the other senior developers.

With this exposure from TCS, I am ready to work in any part of the world. The diversity at work, ranging from technical environment, corporate etiquette and the international cultural exposure has made me more enthusiastic and encouraged to seek other professional experiences like this one.

The Indian experience is also amazing. Indian IT usage has exceeded what anyone could ever imagine; electronic commerce, net banking and many other amazing innovations are coming on the market daily and surprisingly the brains behind all this are young people with an average age of 26 years.

My internship was supposed to end on 21st July, 2012, but the project managers have requested me to extend my Visa for some more months.

Prospects after the internship

I now have a lot to offer my country. The IT sector in Uganda is growing and I seek to contribute to this. My aspiration is to venture into research using IT and avail information to those who need it especially the locals at the grassroots. I am grateful to CIT for their effort in uplifting the IT Industry in Uganda by providing a critical mass of professionals. I encourage the other students to look out for the next call for applications by AIESEC. Your life will not remain the same.
