The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) is a three year full-time degree programme open to all prospective students. The programme offers flexibility while providing the level of knowledge and skills required by industry and professional bodies. The curriculum is designed with emphasis on having the student acquire the business, manufacturing, media, computer and communication skills necessary for employment and career opportunities in todays ICT industries and business organizations.
Students on the BIT Degree Programme develop conceptual and practical IT skills in integrating financial, organisational, marketing and production/service function with an overall business strategy. The majority will take up Managerial positions in Information and Communication Technology (computing and ICT- based sectors, and other positions such as Web-Designers, Web-Programmers, Information Technology Planners, Systems Analysts, IT Project Managers, IT Company Secretaries, Information Systems Specialists and IT Lecturers. Others will take up further studies in Information Technology like a Master of Information Technology (MIT). The Bachelor of Information Technology Degree Programme is offered to give an opportunity to prospective students to undertake training in Information Technology (IT).
This programme also provides an avenue to those already engaged in the IT-sector without formal degree qualifications in IT to join the BIT Degree Programme through either direct or diploma or mature age entry schemes. Since Information Technology is a new discipline, this programme provides a pool of IT Professionals that are much needed in todays IT industry. A full-time student shall not carry less than 15 credit units and not more than 25 credit units (excluding retakes) per semester.
The goal of this programme is to strengthen capability of key decision-makers, policy-makers, and human resources to address the needs of the telecommunications sector in Africa: To generate advanced level policy, regulatory, managerial and technical expertise; To keep abreast of new developments in technology and regional standards and procedures.
Advances in Information Technology (IT) have dramatically transformed the way in which our entire society lives, works, learns, communicates, and does business. In particular, the conduct of science and engineering has been profoundly altered, so that it is possible today to work on problems in these areas at unprecedented levels of speed, precision, and detail. In education, IT has the potential to make available in the remotest corners of the earth the highest levels of learning, information, and analysis. To enhance the positive effects of these transformations, the research in IT explores new scientific, engineering, and educational areas in IT that enhance development.

The programme focuses on Information Security, Information Technology Management, Internet and Service Delivery, and Internet and Web Computing. Action learning is used, where students individually, and in groups, access and apply current IT frameworks to projects, assignments at work environment.

This option entails two themes.
The first theme focuses on internet and service delivery in which the foresight of information technology in governmental, public and private sectors online service delivery is described. The specific research areas in this theme include E-service Delivery; Online Information Services; Organizational Issues in IT; Web Design and Usability Issues; Internet Technologies; E-governance; E-Commerce; E-Business; Security, Risk Management and Control in E-Commerce.
The second theme is on internet and web computing in which students will follow an in depth hands on approach to software-oriented Internet and web-based computing. The specific research areas include Internet Programming; Server-Side Development of E-Commerce Applications; Multi-Media and Immerging Technologies; Web Database Applications; Network and Distributed Systems Programming; Enterprise Wide Computing; and Interaction Design.
The objective of the Department is to produce skilled professionals whose innovations and expertise can make them understand the complex and fast-changing IT environment. The courses taught in the department were designed to specifically meet the current and projected employment needs.
The department gives graduates grounding in business and management skills which are an essential requirement of employers. As computers contribute increasingly to our creativity, communications, entertainment, and well-being, the demand for IT graduates is continuing to grow. Currently companies have developed interest in our students by taking them on as interns in their organisations with a hope of retaining them once they graduate. Because of this need of IT graduates the course has become very competitive.
Still in its infancy the Department is attracting a substantial number of applicants both at undergraduate and postgraduates programmes. This is largely attributed to the fact that the department is providing programmes that are market tailored.
