uliet Komuhendo, a finalist of Computer Science at CIT, is all smiles after the news that she is one of the possible beneficiaries of the Anita Borg computer science scholarship. The scholarship, worth €7,000, targets female students in computer related fields across Africa, Asia and the Middle East, at different entry levels.
“I am the only participant in Uganda this time round, I am so excited. I want to be a Computer engineer because it is a prestigious job, especially since there are very few female ones in Uganda,’’ explained the excited Komuhendo. “I encourage students not to ignore such offers even if it means writing long essays in order to qualify, as was the case with this scholarship,’’ she adds.
Komuhendo will be travelling with over fifty other applicants for a retreat at the Google offices in Zurich -Switzerland this June. The students will present posters of their projects to a panel of judges to select the most outstanding ones. Komuhendo’s proposal is about an antenatal care sms alert system that reminds pregnant women to go for antenatal care, to lessen the morbidity rate.
The Deputy Principal at the College of Computing and Information Sciences, Dr. John Ngubiri, congratulated Komuhendo and encouraged students to be more enthusiastic about available opportunities, some of which are communicated through student mailing lists.
